Launched as the nation’s first Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness program in 2005 at Virginia Commonwealth University, we prepare students to manage the complexities of disaster planning and response.

About the Program

The online Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness program at Virginia Commonwealth University equips you with theoretical and practical knowledge related to security and preparedness issues addressing all hazards, including terrorist threats and natural disasters.

Alumni often work in private and public-sector jobs related to emergency management, security or crisis planning, or pursue graduate study in fields such as government, international affairs, law enforcement, policy planning and law.

Students will learn theoretical and practical knowledge that will prepare them for private or public sector employment in the expanding area of homeland security and emergency preparedness and/or further study in numerous areas of public policy. The curriculum focuses upon international and domestic security and preparedness issues related to terrorist threats, such as the 9/11 attack, and natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina.
