Overview
Special Education courses at Clemson University are designed to meet both national and State standards, and all certification areas have been approved by the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education and the Council for Exceptional Children.
Learning outcomes
The prescribed program of study enables students to identify important legal and policy issues in special education, demonstrate knowledge of the research processes within the field of special education, demonstrate knowledge of specific characteristics of individuals with mild disabilities, and implement scientifically based interventions for students with disabilities in a variety of settings.
The program faculty strives to meet the ever-changing needs of the field through modifications and enhancements in the curriculum and practicum settings. Successful graduates will evaluate critically special education literature, recognize and evaluate current issues and problems in special education and identify potential solutions for these problems.

General requirements
- Currently be working in a formal or informal education setting
- Have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field of education
- (e.g., special education, elementary or secondary education, reading education) or an education-related field (e.g., school psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language, behavior analysis)
- Submit an online Graduate School application which requires:Unofficial transcripts (official transcripts will be required if you are accepted into the program)
- GRE scores
- The test score requirement will be waived if you received a 3.0 GPA or higher in last degree earned
- A current résumé
- Three recommendation forms Recommendation forms are emailed directly to recommenders via the online application process
- All recommendations should be written by professional contacts
- At least two recommendation must focus on your teaching and/or education-related experience
- A personal statement
- Official TOEFL/IELTS scores for international students
