Overview

We are committed to the belief that the study of the classical languages, Latin and Greek, together with the study of the rich and various cultural heritage with which it is inextricably intertwined, are essential for understanding both the core of the Western civilization and the details of all its aspects, as well as for the understanding of the languages derived from Latin and Greek, of English, and of any language at all.

The mission of the M.A. in Classics Program at the University of Kentucky is to train classicists who may pursue a Ph.D. degree in Classics, History, Philosophy, Divinity, or other related fields or become Latin teachers.The program will also benefit those would choose a profession not closely related to Classics.

General goals:

To offer superior teaching in Latin and Greek language and literature at an advanced level.

To offer superior teaching in translation studies, and opportunites for research and presentation skills in Classics through graduate workshops.

To offer (in combination with the Graduate Certificate in Latin Studies) the unique opportunities for advanced understanding and application of Latin through the active, spoken use of the language both in and out of the classroom.

To offer advanced study of Ancient Greek language, literature, and culture, and its contacts with other Mediterranean languages such as Hebrew and Arabic, and opportnites for special focus on Ancient Greek's status as the lingua franca of the Ancient Mediterranean world until the Arab conquest.
