Overview

We welcome applications from students pursuing a Ph.D. elsewhere after completing an MA in English at Georgetown University, as we do from those aspiring to careers in writing, editing, teaching, and many other fields requiring advanced skills in written communication, critical analysis, and research.

Since many of our classes are held in the afternoon and early evening, it is possible for some students to work full-time while in the program. We require students to be enrolled in at least two and no more than three courses per semester. All graduate classes are seminars with an enrollment maximum of 18.

Interdisciplinary Variety

The twenty seminars offered each year reflect the faculty's broad interests but also allow students to develop sub-fields of study in several areas based on the courses being offered in any given year; these may include Medieval Studies, the Early Modern period, British and Trans-Atlantic 18th-Century Studies, Romanticism, British and American 19th-Century Studies, Critical Theory, and Irish and other Anglophone World literatures, as well as in a variety of emerging interdisciplinary fields, including: cultural studies; ethnic, race and post-colonial studies; gender and sexuality studies; and performance, film and media studies.

Academic Statement of Purpose (2–3 pages, single or double spaced) addressing in detail your intellectual interests, academic and professional objectives, and proposed topic(s) of graduate study.

Writing Sample (8–12 pages) of your strongest critical and/or analytical writing on a topic with clear relevance to literary and/or cultural studies. Please keep your submission within the page limit, and note at the top of the first page if it is excerpted from a longer work.

Letters of Recommendation (2)—These should be from academic sources able to comment on your ability to think critically and to analyze texts; letters from employers, friends, or family members are NOT acceptable.

Transcripts—Applicants are required to upload to the application system copies of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.
