University of Hawaii at Manoa Student Learning Outcomes
- Understand, apply and articulate the history, philosophy, principles and ethics of library and information science and the related professions.
- Develop, administrate, assess, and advocate for information services by exercising principled communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
- Organize, create, archive, preserve, retrieve, manage, evaluate, and disseminate information resources in a variety of formats.
- Evaluate and use the latest information technologies, research findings and methods.
- Engage in projects and assignments dealing with multicultural communities and representing diverse points of view.
The Master’s of Library & Information Science (MLISc) program consists of a basic set of required courses, augmented by courses relevant to particular concentrations, and elective courses appropriate for various library or information careers.
Students have the option of pursuing coursework in the General Track or the School Library Media Specialist Track. Each track has specific requirements and electives that allow students to craft an individualized program of study.
Within the General Track, students can specialize further according to their professional goals. These areas of emphasis are not hard-and-fast tracks, but rather a set of suggested courses that will provide additional experience and understanding in a certain specialization.
Accreditation
The American Library Association accredits master’s programs in Library and Information Science in North America.

General requirements
- Hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education.
- Submit a copy of the passport identification pages, or a copy of the national identification card if a passport is not available.
- Submit one transcript or academic record from each institution of higher education attended, including any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs.
- Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take English Language Proficiency.
- Show proof of sufficient funding to cover all educational and living expenses, including expenses for any accompanying spouse or children.
