This Gerontology program at University of Southern California prepares graduates to take on major leadership roles in the private and public sectors, working in planning, evaluating, and administering programs. It is also designed for graduate students who want to assume executive positions that deliver direct services to older people and their families or teach older adults and service providers.


Program Learning Objectives

  • Gerontology students will relate social theories and science of aging to understanding heterogeneity,inequality, and context of aging.
  • Students will learn to distinguish factors related to aging outcomes, both intrinsic andcontextual, through critical thinking and empirical research• Students will promote older persons’ strengths and adaptations to maximize well-being, health,and mental status
  • Students will promote quality of life and positive social environment for older persons
  • Students will learn to employ and design programmatic and community development with andon behalf of the aging population
  • Students will learn to employ and generate policy to equitably address the needs of olderpersons
  • Students will engage in research to advance knowledge and improve interventions for olderpersons

Academic requirements

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

  • 2 letters of recommendation, either uploaded in your university application or mailed separately by your recommenders.
  • Official transcripts should be mailed directly to our office. Students must declare all schools on the application and submit transcripts from all institutions attended (even if it was for just one semester) after high school
