Leisure and Events Management

I am currently a second-year Leisure and Events Management student, and over the past year and a half, I managed to settle into both my studies and life in Leeuwarden. I adapted quite quickly, especially thanks to the Study Start Week organized by fellow students. It was a great opportunity to meet my classmates and become familiar with the city from the first week. The Design-Based Education (DBE) approach is very hands-on and practical, which I find extremely valuable. It allows us to collaborate with real clients such as SPOT Groningen, Noorderzone, and Neushoorn, and to work on actual challenges these organizations face. This makes the learning experience much more engaging and relevant to the field. In the second year, students are also required to complete a 168-hour internship. I recently completed mine together with several classmates, where we helped organize a five-day field trip to Paris and Disneyland for around 140 participants. One of the highlights was attending a lecture by the creative directors at Disney Imagineering, who shared insights into the development of some of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions. This internship has been one of the most valuable learning experiences for me so far. It really pushed me to grow and apply what I’ve learned in a real-world setting. Overall, the university offers many opportunities, but it’s important to stay proactive and make the most of them.

My Experience as an IB Student

My experience with the program at NHL Stenden has been generally positive, though not without its challenges. I found the program itself to be good and manageable, with a structure that allows students to gradually build their understanding. However, due to recent changes in the curriculum, there was quite a bit of disorganization at times, which led to dissatisfaction among some of my classmates. This is an area that could definitely be improved for future cohorts. That being said, NHL Stenden as an institution is very supportive. The staff are welcoming and genuinely try to help students as much as they can, which creates a positive learning environment. The quality of lectures varies depending on the subject and lecturer, but most of them are insightful and provide valuable knowledge. I especially found the ateliers to be very useful, as they allow students to fully immerse themselves in the topics and better understand the material. While some subjects may not seem particularly useful at first, they contribute to a broader understanding when combined. The program does a good job of teaching business structures, cultural awareness, and how cultural differences can impact companies. Additionally, the frequent group projects encourage collaboration and help students become more open, which I believe is an essential skill in the business world. Overall, despite some organizational issues, I would say the program offers a valuable learning experience with strong support from the institution.

Hotel Management School Leeuwarden

The Hotel Management School in Leeuwarden is a great place to kick-start a career in hospitality. It gives students plenty of opportunities to grow into confident professionals through a mix of theory and hands-on experience. The strong focus on real-world learning means you're really getting prepared for your future career. One of the best parts is the chance to work on your own projects, so you can be creative and bring your own ideas to life. It makes studying a lot more interesting and a lot less “just another assignment.” The international environment is another bonus, preparing you for a career pretty much anywhere in the world. Overall, it’s a fun and motivating place that really helps you grow into a hospitality professional.

Student services

Whatever your question, the Student Info Desk can point you in the right direction. They’re on hand to deal with your queries about registration, tuition fees, tests, certificates and practical questions about your time as a student. The Student Counselling Office can help you if you’re worried about your studies and the progress you’re making. There’s always someone to turn to.

Housing services

At NHL Stenden, we offer a housing guarantee for international students with our official accommodation partners. Conditions apply. In the Netherlands, students usually rent a room in a shared house or apartment with other students. There are also options to rent a one-bedroom or studio apartment. Student accommodation is usually provided by real estate agents or private landlords who advertise their rooms on different platforms.

Library services

Borrow books, use the smart boards, printers and scanners, follow workshops on digital skills, use the computers and study spaces and ask the information specialists for help finding answers.

ICT services

NHL Stenden offers the learning, library and IT facilities you need to take you through your studies. From something as simple as good wifi right up to the farthest corner of the campuses to 3D printing in our X-Lab. From free software to purpose-built design and recording studios.

Medical services

The Dutch healthcare system is a universal, multi-payer system. This means healthcare is funded through a combination of public and private contributions.

You have access to a whole range of top facilities on campus that not only support you and help you get the best out of your studies, but also help make your student life easier.
