Stenden University of Applied Sciences was founded in 2008 after a merger between two universities: CHN University Netherlands and Drenthe University. Combined they have a long history tracing back to the 1800 with their first study programmes in the field of primary school teaching. Over the years the university has grown into an international institute with a well-established reputation.


NHL Stenden strives to help students develop their creativity and leadership skills by creating “real world” work environments which provide students with experience as well as practical learning.


Research at Stenden University of Applied Sciences is conducted in very close cooperation with the respective industries. The different research groups consisting of lecturers and students of the study programmes work with business and non-profit organizations to determine current and future trends and ultimately solve actual issues that these organizations face.

Stenden strives to help students develop their professional expertise and leadership skills by creating “real world” work environments which provide students with practical learning experience. The 4 star Stenden hotel which is situated on the Leeuwarden University campus allows Stenden to host the largest International Hospitality Management course within Europe


Student services

At Stenden students are being guided step by step through their application and until their arrival so they can start carefree with their study programme. In the first week of their studies, students participate in a Study Start Week which introduces them to the facilities and teaching practices at Stenden, but also offers the opportunity to connect with fellow students. Throughout their studies each student has a personal coach, an academic staff member who assists the student with his personal and professional development. A great variety of student associations and initiatives offers students plenty of options to gain extracurricular experience and enjoy student life to the fullest.

Housing services

Our official accommodation partner Student Stay provides exclusive access to accommodation in close proximity to the Stenden Campus. Rooms and apartments can be rented furnished or unfurnished and students from outside the European Union receive guaranteed availability. In addition there are plenty of other options to rent a suitable room or apartments, however it is advised to start looking for accommodation a few months before study start.

NHL Stenden is an international institute with its main campus in Leeuwarden which is described as the ‘Venice of the North’, additionally, NHL Stenden has 9 campuses worldwide, 5 within the Netherlands as well as operating in South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia and Thailand.
