The University of Silesia in Katowice, which educates nearly 40.000 students, is one of the biggest public university in Poland. It offers Bachelor, Master and Doctoral studies as well as postgraduate courses. University’s programmes are approved by the Ministry of Education and continuously evaluated by the State Accreditation Committee what guarantees its excellent quality.



The University of Silesia was established on 8 June 1968 as Poland’s ninth university. The university was created through a merger of a branch of the Jagiellonian University existing in Katowice since 1963 with the Higher School of Pedagogy which at that time was the only academic institution in the region, with its roots dating back to 1928.


The programmes offer a total of over 160 specialisations, including Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Data Analyst, Geophysics, Nanophysics and Mesoscopic Materials, Physics of Nanosystems and Quantum Information Technology, Geoecology, and Geoecotourism. The University of Silesia regularly upgrades its didactic offer by launching new programmes which reflect the needs of the labour market


Studies conducted by researchers from the University of Silesia are extremely versatile and the findings are applicable in many disciplines.

They predominantly concern such disciplines as: health and medicine, food and agriculture, environment and climate change, biotechnology, information technologies, nanotechnologies, materials and new technologies, energy, as well as various law, culture and education-related issues.

Research priorities of particular faculties within the University of Silesia also depend on the specificity of these faculties (theology, fine arts, cinematography, ethnology, philosophy) and the region (research on Silesia and Borderland).


The mission of the Career Center – one of the most dynamically developing units of the University of Silesia – is to facilitate students’ and graduates’ entrance into and successful functioning within the labor market, as well as to provide support in gaining professional experience, along with guidance on job searching and career advancement. These goals are realized via a variety of activities that promote partnering between the academic society and potential employers.

Student services

Students' Activity Zone is university’s unit devoted entirely to serving the student communities. Incorporating among others Student’s Service Center and Career Center, the mission of the zone is not only to support the students in financial, psychological and legal matters, but also to facilitate their entrance and functioning in the labor market. Students' Activity Zone also ensures equal opportunities in terms of access to higher education for people with disabilities.

Housing services

  • In order to apply for accommodation the candidate has to fill certain fields in the Online Application System account and choose the dormitory and type of room in which the student intends to stay during studies. 
  • In case the type of the room the student applied for is not currently available, the university may offer you another accommodation option - place in a different type of a room of or in other dormitory.
  • The student has a possibility to get accommodated in a dormitory together with chosen person. In order to do so, both parties should contact the head of a dormitory.
  • The payment for the dormitories should be made either by wire transfer or on spot through credit/debit card.

Library services

The Main Library of the University of Silesia and 5 faculty-specific libraries are established, offering a total of approx. 93.000 volumes(more).

The University has a good point of view about filmmaking, photography and related issues. I had to chance to experience shooting films, writing a script and learning the film theory from different views.
