The history of the whole university begins in 1906 with the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Czech Polytechnics in Prague. In 1952 the faculty became the University of Agriculture, which was later (in 2007) renamed to Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. The Faculty of Environmental Sciences was established on 1 July 2007 by splitting the former Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Sciences.
The Faculty is divided into six departments which cover the whole field of education and science at the faculty. We offer programmes related to ecology, environment protection, landscape ecology and planning, water resources, modelling of environmental processes and environmental geochemistry. Number of specialized laboratories (e.g. for environmental geochemistry, erosion and sedimentology, hydrochemistry, hydropedology, molecular genetics, remote sensing) provide access to modern tools and equipment. Many of our students participate in activities of our internationally recognized research teams, ensuring the connection to top research and cooperation with private and governmental sectors at the same time.
Priority research areas of the Faculty include complex topics ranging from community ecology, climate change, hydrology, biodiversity conservation, protected area management, biotechnical land consolidation in the landscape, water resources management, environmental geochemistry and remediation, landscape planning, and methodological issues of EIA / SEA.We publish in the most prestigious international periodic journals (e.g. Nature, Science). Practical application of the results of our research are implemented by both state and privateorganizations. We share our results with the public.
