In 1736, the Ludoviciana – as Giessen University was called up until 1945, in honour of its founder, Landgrave Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt – took the blue, silver-framed three-armed Antoniterkreuz (Cross of St Anthony) as its university crest, which it continues to display.


JLU combines a broad and interdisciplinary spectrum of research and teaching in the areas of law, economics and business studies, the natural sciences, and the humanities with a range of sub-disciplines that is unique for Germany.

The GGS offers its members a wide range of services, which cover the following areas:

  • Special programmes for international researchers at the GGS.

Housing services

The Housing Department of the Student Services of the university reserves a certain number of rooms in university student flats for ECTS-students. The reservation procedure will start as soon as your request for accomodation reservation has been sent to the university. Make sure that your request for accomodationreservation will arrive in Giessen before 15.01. (summer semester) or 15.07. (winter semester) respectively. You will then receive an application form which you have to complete and return to the Studentenwerk. Please use this official form of the Studentenwerk only.

Being an international course, I was able to meet different people from different backgrounds both socially and academically. The course was somewhat broad and I was able to learn new methods as well as expand the methods already known.
The courses offered in english are only free choice courses....

The courses offered in english are only free choice courses. This makes it a little hard to find equivalent courses to substitute them.
