Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. This University has emerged from the institutions initially founded by the philanthropist and educationist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar during the 1950's.
The University has 44 Departments, 9 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 46 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University.
Research is one of the strongest components of Alagappa University. All the faculty members of the University have been actively engaged in research. The University Grants Commission has been supporting the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Physical Education under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP).

There are three Guest Houses available in the Alagappa University campus viz. University Main Guest House, International Students Residence and Faculty Guest House.
The Library collection includes one lakh volumes of printed books, subscriptions to 149 printed periodicals, 492 items of non-book materials, and 1446 volumes of theses in print form. Access to 6242+ numbers of Online journals and 1,31,000+ numbers of e-theses are also available.
ICT infrastructure is upgraded periodically with all University/project funds. The Internet connectivity, Wi-Fi, High-end computing facility etc. are well cared for, enabling support for research.
The Health Care Centre provides full treatment and medicines free of cost for all university students and staff. 24/7 service is also provided during emergency situations. There is a consultation room, a physiotherapy room, an investigation lab, and a counseling room separately for patient privacy. In-patient beds are also provided in the Centre.
Alagappa University is located at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu and is accessible from Madurai and Tiruchirappalli airports within two hours. The 440 acre green and lush campus houses all the academic activities.
The university offers students the use of an indoor gymnasium.
