History
Skoltech was founded in 2011 in collaboration with MIT as a pioneering institute of the new type in Russia, where science went hand in hand with practical impact on the economy. Over 15 years, Skoltech grew into an internationally oriented institute, attracting diverse faculty and students and delivering cutting-edge technologies addressing global challenges across many technological domains.
Education
Skoltech delivers education at the forefront of STEM fields, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Aiming to nurture a new generation of technological leaders in high global demand, the institute offers competitive English-taught master's and PhD programs, along with professional training for managers and engineers. Education is organized around six priority areas: life sciences; telecommunications, photonics, and quantum technologies; artificial intelligence; advanced materials and engineering; energy efficiency and the energy transition; and advanced studies.
Research
Research at Skoltech focuses on bridging the gap between fundamental science and industrial application, with strong international recognition of its scientific output — in 2024, 34 Skoltech researchers were among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists. The institute prioritizes 6 areas: AI; life sciences; telecommunications, photonics, and quantum technologies; advanced materials and engineering; energy efficiency and the energy transition; advanced studies. Skoltech research groups work on real scientific and technological challenges and deliver tangible results — for instance, the world’s first ultrafast optical polariton transistor and Russia’s first 5G base stations.
Career
Skoltech graduates have strong career prospects across 3 primary tracks: industry, entrepreneurship, and academia. Graduates are highly sought after by top-tier Russian and international companies. Also, Skoltech’s ecosystem is specifically designed to foster new businesses, with over 200 startups established by students and alumni. A special Industrial PhD track enables students to pursue their PhD studies while employed at an organization, integrating their industrial projects into their research. As of early 2026, the alumni community includes over 2,700 graduates working at more than 500+ companies and 200+ universities globally.

Skoltech is what a modern university should be like
In the Skoltech I passed a lot of scientific and engineering courses in such fields as orbital mechanics, robotics, space sector of the world market, machine learning and AI, as well as, marketing and creation of a startup. What I liked the most about this university is a lot of practice. At the end of every course we developed some course project where we applied all we learned. For example, on the machine learning course I developed a machine learning algorithm together with my team for classification task. This algorithm was based on the Adaboost algorithm and could adapt to imbalance data conditions. Another memorable project was my thesis work. Here I also worked with my team and developed a computer vision, mapping and collision avoidance systems for a two-wheeled mobile robot. The idea was to teach the robot to navigate in highly cluttered outdoor environments with various obstacles. The robot should estimate class of obstacles and these size to pass small ones between its legs. In result we assembled the robot and passed simulation and field experiments. Also the university has well equipped modern laboratories, comfortable dormitories and provides scholarships, as well as, medical insurance to all it students. This experience left a huge positive impression on me.

Student services
The Skoltech Student Council is recognized by the institute administration as the official voice of the student body. This group is a representative student-elected body that offers a forum to address all kinds of campus issues and an opportunity for students to become involved in the institute community. International students also have access to additional resources and programs that help them integrate and thrive on campus. The administration actively collaborates with the Council, supporting student initiatives and ensuring a welcoming environment for everyone.
Housing services
Skoltech provides dedicated student accommodation through 2 main complexes located directly on the Skolkovo Innovation Center territory, within walking distance of the main campus. These facilities are managed by the institute's dormitory administration to serve its current students. The accommodation is modern, "IKEA-style" with a separate kitchen, bathroom, and laundry machine. Most students share a 2-room or 3-room apartment with 1-2 roommates. Living on campus means being in a “city of the future” with parks, bike paths, and coworking spaces nearby, while central Moscow is just a 30-minute bus ride away.
Library services
The Skoltech Library is a modern knowledge hub offering:
- A physical space on the main campus, open around the clock, featuring an extensive book collection, silent zones, group study rooms and coworking areas equipped for collaborative project work.
- Digital collections: students have full access to leading global scientific databases, including IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Nature.
ICT services
Skoltech provides a high-tech digital environment for all students. Free, seamless Wi-Fi is available across the campus and student dormitories. Several computer labs are equipped with modern workstations pre-loaded with engineering and scientific software and Microsoft Office 365.
Medical services
Skoltech provides on-and-off-campus health support. On campus there is a First Aid Station for urgent matters. International students receiving Skoltech-funded tuition also get medical insurance and can use private clinics for general health care, specialist visits, or diagnostics. Skoltech students who will be abroad for significant periods will also be provided with travel insurance.
Campus life
The Skoltech Campus is a brand-new building with a total area of 136,000 square meters that won the Prix Versailles award for Best University Campus. From above, it looks like 12 rectangular laboratory hangars and 3 intertwined rings of different sizes, symbolizing Skoltech’s core idea — the integration of science, entrepreneurship, and education. The Campus houses 40 world-class laboratories, lecture halls, and multifunctional spaces.
Located just a few kilometers from the Moscow city center, Skoltech offers close access to a major metropolitan area, world-class theater and ballet, historical sites, and green spaces. The campus also offers daily conveniences: cafes, nearby supermarkets, and sport facilities.
Sports facilities
The campus offers a traditional gym as well as plenty of dedicated fitness zones for yoga, Pilates, and group classes. We also take pride in our vibrant sports traditions, including:
- Skoltech Running Club
- Weekly yoga classes
- A variety of sports teams and interest-based clubs, including Wind & Water/Ice Sports Club
- Inviting guest trainers from World Class, one of Moscow’s leading fitness networks, for exclusive sessions.
Also, the Skolkovo territory offers extensive bike paths, jogging trails, and outdoor workout areas. In winter, many of these paths are used for cross-country skiing. During the warm season, students can play on the sports ground near the pond behind the Skoltech building.
