Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of Black Hills Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883.

The Registrar's Office is responsible for student registration, enrollment verification, academic records maintenance, transfer credit evaluation, academic catalogs, awarding degrees, WebAdvisor assistance, withdrawals, and transcript services.
Five residence halls and the Yellow Jacket Apartments provide housing for students. All of our residence halls are co-ed. Our halls are Bordeaux, Heidepriem, Thomas, Humbert, and Wenona Cook.
