The Hilo Program, located on Haili Street, begins as an extension division of UH Mānoa. Located in the former Hilo Boarding School, just above the present Lyman Museum on Haili Street, the Hilo Program had three faculty, four part-time lecturers, and 46 freshman students. Photo circa 1952-1953

Kilohana's mission is to support the learning and retention of all UH Hilo students by fostering the development of independent, self-motivated learners through subject-specific support and academic skills development. This is accomplished by building a network with other units on campus so that faculty and the other members of the campus community are aware of, and utilize effectively, the full spectrum of services that support success.
The Edwin H. Mookini Library, completed in 1981, is located in the heart of the campus. Available to students are 220,000 bound volumes and 1,100 current periodicals from Hawaiʻi, the U.S. mainland, Asia and Europe. Special formats collected include films, audio, and video cassettes, slides, compact discs, DVDs, microforms and electronic information.

Health insurance is highly recommended for all students. A University of Hawaiʻi endorsed student health insurance plan is designed for students and is generally less expensive than most other health insurance plans. On-campus housing accommodates most needs of single, married, and physically-challenged students in residence halls and apartments. To be eligible for on-campus housing you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours (usually four courses). All residence halls have recreation lounges, television room, study rooms (except Hale ʻIkena) and laundry facilities.
UH Hilo is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
