SUFE's history can be traced back to the Fall of 1917 when a commerce program was established at Nanjing Higher Normal School. In 1921, the program was transferred to Shanghai and developed into Shanghai College of Commerce which was the vanguard in commercial education in Mainland China.

The Educational Technology Center of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, founded in September 1999, is an educational auxiliary body directly subordinate to the university. It serves as an indispensable part of the university’s public service system.
The Medical Health Center is the university's internal medical service center, providing services for all students and staff of the university. Health care and outpatient services, including internal medicine, surgery and gynecology, are the main services provided.
The university covers an area of about 136 acres (826 mu) and consists of three campuses, with the main campus at No. 777 Guoding Road.
The College Cup is a large sports competition consisting of six events in basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis and tennis. Whilst providing a varied extra-curricular life, the activities also promote a strong and healthy physique and improve students' sense of competition and teamwork ability.
There are 78 student clubs at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, including the Accounting Association, the Forum of International Cooperation, the DIY Club, the Club of Tea Arts, the Karate Club, the Golf Club, Translover, the Association of Student Assistants, the Sunshine Public Welfare Club and the Hand-in-hand Environmental Protection club[Similar as above.
