The relationship between major and career is indirect and complicated. Deciding on a major, whether you are choosing one or contemplating a change, can be a daunting task, especially when you are trying to connect the major to some future career. For example, Stony Brook’s major in journalism would prepare you to be a journalist; the major in chemical engineering would prepare you to be a chemical engineer.

My university is affordable compared to others because I am a state resident. However, as an older student I felt and still feel very isolated on this campus. There are large classes of up to 500 people. The professors are decent. In general, I have found American universities to be more of a business then a individualistic learning experience.
The professors within the English department are great. Stony Brook University is viewed typically as a STEM school, but I truly believe their English department is underrated. Professors are always happy to help and the department advisor is almost always available.
Campus is not friendly to 24/7 studying. But there are many places to study during regular hours
