Program Details

The Master of Science in Applied Probability and Statistics at Northern Illinois University is designed to offer you the skills you need to become immediately hirable statisticians.

Thesis Option

The thesis option is usually recommended by the department. Each student pursuing this option must enroll in STAT 699, Master’s Thesis, for at least two semesters, and submit a written thesis. Up to three semester hours credit in STAT 699 may be applied toward the degree. The student’s thesis adviser serves as chair of the graduate committee that administers a defense of the thesis.

Non-Thesis Option

The non-thesis option is primarily for students who intend to pursue doctoral work in the mathematical sciences at NIU. With departmental consent, the student must complete a 33-semester hour program of courses approved by the department and pass a written comprehensive examination.

Completed a four-year undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution or one with equivalent recognition.
Achieved a 2.75 grade point average on a 4.00 scale, or the equivalent.
If you received a three-year degree awarded through the Bologna process in Europe or a three-year Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business Administration awarded in India, you are eligible to apply (provided you are seeking admission to the MBA or OMIS program).
