The curriculum of the Education - Middle Grades program of Eastern Kentucky University focuses on education best practices and promotes knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the unique needs of different student populations.

Middle Grades is a 30 hour program designed to help teachers certified to teach in middle schools (5-9) improve their professional skills, expand their subject knowledge, and increase their understanding of the intellectual, philosophical and cultural foundations of effective education. Educators leave our program prepared to enhance the middle grade learning experience and help students to reach their full potential.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

  • Admission to the Graduate School
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
  • Statement of Eligibility or Professional Certificate with EPSB within the same grade span of elementary, middle, or secondary education.
  • Reference inventory on Candidate Dispositions
  • Professional Code of Ethics, Character Fitness Declaration, and Professional Dispositions
  • Candidates must review the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky School Certified Personnel
  • Candidates must review the character and fitness questionnaire contained in Section III of the CA-1
  • Candidates must demonstrate understanding of professional dispositions expected of professional educators
