Overview
Information Studies at UCL can also offer unparalleled opportunities for cross-domain research, such as user studies and usability, metadata, the management of electronic resources, information governance, data science and semantic technologies for the humanities.
In the Information Studies PhD, students undertake research in fields including critical library and archives studies, knowledge organisation, social media, digital inequities, information literacy, geographic information systems, the book trade and book cultures, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Graduate attributes
Some of the research students have already worked as information professionals in the public and private sectors, or in academia in the UK and worldwide. Other research students have recently completed master’s degree courses and have yet to start a professional career.
The research students develop specialised, current knowledge in a specific area of information studies, alongside awareness of how information studies intersects with related fields of study, as evidenced through the production of the doctoral thesis. As part of their doctoral studies, research students will also develop competence in research methods, ethical principles, critical analysis and reflection, academic writing and communication.
These attributes directly transfer to academic positions, leadership roles within the cultural heritage workplace as well as alternative academic careers.
