Overview
There are two principal streams that form the Architectural Space and Computation MPhil/PhD at UCL.
In Space and Society in Buildings and Cities, you will use Space Syntax theories and methods to study the effects of spatial design on aspects of the social, organisational and economic performance of buildings and urban areas. In the first year, you will audit selected modules from Space Syntax: Architecture and Cities MSc benefiting from the rigorous training in theories and methods that these provide.
With Architectural Computation, you will develop and apply technology to research into the built environment and interaction with (and within) the built environment, bringing innovative computational generative and analytical methods. This includes the development and application of AI, analytical and machine learning methods, and extended reality-based approaches and experiences such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality to the heart of the design process. If you take this route, in your first year you may audit selected modules from Architectural Computation MSc, gaining training in computation theories and methods.
Key Facts
The topic of your doctoral thesis will range from workplace design, spatial narratives and urban design to media architecture, design for interaction and architectural computation where the research integrates computational design, digital fabrication and advanced robotics, to create new ways of working with both digital computation and physical materials.
Research is supported by the school’s exceptional suite of workshops, and digital manufacturing facilities across multiple sites, including our state-of-the-art collaborative laboratories at UCL Here East. Material innovation is paralleled by scholarship that theorises and contextualises digital approaches to production and looks at how such transformative technology can have far-reaching benefits for society and the planet.Programme Structure
