Overview
Through rigorous academic training, experiential learning, and a commitment to ethical practice, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling at University of Oklahoma aims to empower students to become leaders and advocates in the field of mental health and wellness. The faculty strives to cultivate an inclusive and supportive educational environment that values diversity, promotes personal and professional growth, and encourages a commitment to lifelong learning. The mission is to prepare graduates who are equipped to make a positive impact in their communities, address the complex challenges of the counseling profession, and contribute to the overall well-being of individuals and society.
Program Objectives:
- Develop Culturally Competent Counseling Skills: Ensure that all students are trained to understand, appreciate, and navigate the cultural factors that impact the diverse population we serve as professionals. We help students to integrate this understanding into their counseling practices through multicultural counseling courses and training in culturally responsive interventions.
- Develop & Promote Ethical Counseling Practices & Identities: Help students foster a strong ethical foundation and encourage continuous self-reflection among students. This is usually achieved through coursework on counseling ethics, supervised clinical experiences, and reflective journals or supervision sessions that emphasize ethical decision-making and professional conduct.
- Integrate Empirically Based Practices: Equip students with the knowledge and skills to utilize evidence-based practices in their counseling work. This involves offering training in the latest research-based counseling techniques and interventions, as well as promoting ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
- Foster Personal and Professional Growth: Create an educational environment that supports both personal and professional growth. This can be facilitated through mentorship programs, personal counseling, self-care workshops, and activities that promote resilience and well-being among students.
