Overview

The Master of Social Work at Lewis University provides social work practitioners who are committed to evidence-based practice and social justice with a comprehensive set of practice skills, and the flexibility to work in complex and ever-changing practice environments. The 60-hour program can be completed in two years as a full-time student or four years as a part-time student.

Key facts

Through the Master of Social Work (MSW) program, students will have the opportunity to study and apply theory and practice in real world circumstances through two clinically supervised internships. With the support and mentorship of a credentialed social work professional, students will learn how to think and solve problems like a social worker. The MSW program at Lewis University enables students to integrate research and advanced practice, add greater depth into the provision of services, and strengthen skills to function as clinical social workers, administrators, and clinical supervisors. As a result of learning and experiences in the MSW program, students will be able to do the following:

Promote the development of programs and services that ensure social and economic justice
Develop advanced interpersonal practice skills
Develop skills for developing and enhancing social functioning
Synthesize theoretical and research concepts from multiple perspectives to inform inquiry and practice
Formulate creative responses to complex issues through critical analysis
Model ethical and professional behaviors to guide inquiry and practice in a global and diverse society

General requirements

Submitted a completed application with an accompanying personal statement, which serves as a writing sample, and a non-refundable application fee.

Submitted two letters of recommendation from professors, employers or supervisors (at least one letter from an instructor is strongly preferred).

Submitted an official transcript of all academic work previously attempted or completed. An applicant’s GPA should equal a 3.0 Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale.

Certified their proficiency in reading and writing English, if the applicant is from a non-English speaking country, by achieving a 550 on the TOEFL written exam; 213 on the computerized exam; 79 on the Internet-based exam or IELTS score of 6.0. ELS level 112 completed. Step Eiken (Japan) Pre-1 is also accepted.

Received acceptance by the Graduate Council of the College of Education and Social Sciences.
