Overview

The residents in this Dental Public Health Residency program at The University of Texas at San Antonio participate in seminars, conduct dental public health research, and provide preventive services at elementary schools in our school-based prevention programs. We require residents to teach undergraduate dental students, as well as participate in clinical rotations across South Texas. Our program offers service-learning experiences within dental public health clinics across the country.

Our Dental Public Health Residency Program equipments residents with an excellent education and professional experiences which will be instrumental to the develop of the following traits and marketable skills:

Examine current oral health trends and needs within a community to determine areas of improvement.
Enhance critical thinking including analysis skills, excellent communication and attention to detail.
Identify, evaluate, and interpret scientific literature to support theories and applications.
Understand and monitor new oral health programs and policies to advocate culturally appropriate community oral health delivery to vulnerable populations.

Programme Structure

Courses included:

Dental public health residents are required to take coursework in Advanced Studies in Dental Public Health and Research Methodology.
Residents are expected to have reviewed the seminal and current literature about a topic in dental public health and discuss their findings with the faculty members.
Faculty members in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and other departments share their expertise with the residents.
The residents will supervise dental students during community-based rotations at Head Start clinics and school-based prevention programs.

General requirements

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS/DMD) degree or an international dental degree (BDS). Both ADA-accredited and non-accredited Schools are eligible.
Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. An equivalent degree is acceptable as long as the following core courses have been completed: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, behavioral sciences and health care policy and management. Master's Degree must be from a Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited Institution in the United States.
