Overview

In the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at The University of Texas at San Antonio there is an excellent balance between inpatient admissions and outpatient visits encompassing dentoalveolar and implant surgery, maxillofacial trauma, pathology, orthognathic, preprosthetic, temporomandibular joint and reconstructive surgery.

There are approximately 10,000 outpatient procedures performed annually in the oral surgery clinic and 450 hospital admissions.

Internship

Our fourth year of residency is spent in a general surgery/anesthesia internship (PGY1

certificate), which exposes residents to a variety of surgical technoques and management of pre- and post-operative care.

Programme Structure

Courses included:

Commencing in the first year at the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, an innovative curriculum is tailored to integrate both first and second-year medical school coursework that specifically caters to the needs of OMS residents.
The second year of residency, spanning 48 weeks, entails immersive clinical clerkships.
In the third year of training, residents advance to their senior year of medical school while serving as junior residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The fourth year of residency centers on a general surgery and anesthesia internship.
In the fifth year, residents ascend to the role of senior assistant in oral and maxillofacial surgery, enjoying increased autonomy commensurate with their accrued knowledge and skills.
The sixth and final year, as chief resident, entails full-spectrum involvement in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice.
