Overview
The MS in Statistics - Connect program at Northeastern University is designed for students from all backgrounds with a bachelor’s degree, provided the student has experience with basic calculus and statistics. The first semester of the program gives students the foundational knowledge in math and programming needed to study successfully alongside direct-entry graduate students in the Master of Science in Statistics program. This program’s highly curated curriculum combines foundational theory, essential skills and concepts, and hands-on experiences and opportunities to meet the demand for statistical knowledge that can be applied across diverse industries.
Students can choose from three in-demand, interdisciplinary pathways: biostatistics, statistical machine learning, and statistical theory and modeling.
Industry-specific concentrations
Specialize in one of three industry-aligned concentrations:
- Biostatistics, offered by Bouvé College of Health Sciences, includes rigorous coursework covering topics like causal inference, survival analysis, and the design and analysis of clinical trials. Students gain proficiency in modern statistical software and advanced biostatistical techniques, and they gain hands-on experience from projects in class, capstone projects, or statistical consultancy opportunities.
- Statistical machine learning, offered by the College of Sciences, gives students practical skills in database management and advanced knowledge of AI and machine learning techniques to analyze complex data and develop predictive models for various applications. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics with a strong emphasis on practical implementations. Students engage in hands-on projects and research utilizing cutting-edge software and tools. Graduates are prepared for careers in technology, finance, healthcare, and research, where they can contribute to developing and applying machine learning algorithms.
- Statistical theory and modeling, offered by Khoury College of Computer Science, offers comprehensive training in the fundamental principles of machine learning, statistical learning theory, and statistical and probabilistic modeling techniques to analyze and interpret complex data across diverse fields. The curriculum includes courses in advanced machine learning and statistical learning theory, probability theory, mathematical statistics, and various modeling approaches. Students develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills and gain experience and proficiency in statistical software through real-world data analysis.
This program is visa-eligible at Northeastern University campuses in the United States and Canada.
