How are economic policy choices made and what are their consequences? How can we solve the new and looming societal challenges that arise from the relationship’s politics and the economy? This Political Economy programme from UCL will equip you with the skills to answer these questions.

This degree will equip you with the analytical, theoretical, empirical and critical skills to answer these questions, through a problem-based approach based on central contemporary political and economic challenges. This includes combining powerful analytical tools, many drawn from the discipline of economics, with empirical realism about people’s political motives and behaviour.

Who this course is for

The programme is suitable for graduates with an interest in politics and economics, and a strong quantitative background.

It is for students who want to specialise at the intersection of economics and politics, and to develop the necessary skills for careers in these fields, and in public policy.

It is also designed to prepare students for research careers, especially through further academic study at the doctoral level.

We understand these skills to be highly valued in interesting and important parts of the labour market.

As such, we expect graduates from this course to be competitive in a broad range of occupations including research posts within and outside the academy; in a wide range of policy analysis and political roles in both the public and third (NGO) sector, as well as in data science and management, marketing, finance, business consulting and journalism.
