About

The Human-Computer Interaction track (MSc Information Studies) explores how people societies interact with data-driven technologies - and how to design them to be effective, ethical, and inclusive. HCI focuses on the human dimensions of AI and data. You will study critical theory, multimodal interaction, while developing hands-on skills in prototyping, user testing, and research.

Overview

The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) track of the MSc Information Studies explores how people, organisations, and societies interact with data-driven technologies - and how to design them to be effective, ethical, and inclusive. Uniquely linked to the Data Science track, HCI focuses on the human and organisational dimensions of AI and data. You will study critical theory, multimodal interaction, and human-AI interaction, while developing hands-on skills in prototyping, user testing, and research. Taught by leading UvA researchers and set in Amsterdam’s vibrant tech hub, this programme prepares you to drive responsible digital transformation in academia, industry, and beyond.

Here’s why you want to study Human-Computer Interaction (Information Studies) in Amsterdam

Two sides of the same coin IS offers two complementary perspectives: computation on one side, people and organisations on the other. Together, they help you design socially responsible data-driven technologies.

The only MSc of its kind in the Netherlands The only programme that combines human-centred design, data science, and AI into one integrated vision of information systems.

Technology with impact Design technology that works for - and with - people, addressing ethics, culture, and policy. Gain the expertise to lead future-focused transformations that are both ethical and sustainable.

Learn from leading research Building on decades of academic and industry experience in Information Studies, you will be taught by UvA experts whose cutting-edge projects shape the field today.

Human-Computer Interaction will suit you, if you…

  • Want to connect technology, people, and organisations in meaningful ways.
  • Enjoy designing interactive systems that are ethical, inclusive, and user-friendly.
  • Are curious about how AI, data, and multimodal technologies affect society.
  • Like to combine technical skills with critical and creative thinking.
  • See yourself working at the intersection of design, data science, and human behaviour.
  • Want to prototype, test, and refine ideas in a cutting-edge research environment
  • Want to develop a strong foundation in ethics, as well as the critical and creative thinking skills needed to shape responsible technological innovation.

Programme Structure

The Human-Computer Interaction track explores how people, organisations, and societies interact with data-driven technologies - and how we can design these systems to be effective, ethical, and inclusive. You will study both the theory and practice of HCI, from understanding human perception and cognition, to designing multimodal interfaces and evaluating user experiences. Throughout the programme, you will engage with real-world challenges, applying your skills in projects that combine technical development with social insight.

A distinctive feature of this track is its close connection to the Data Science track, sharing a common foundation but offering a complementary focus: where Data Science examines algorithms and computational techniques, HCI focuses on the human and organisational dimensions. You will benefit from teaching and supervision by leading researchers at the UvA, whose work directly informs your learning. The curriculum combines rigorous academic study with hands-on prototyping, user testing, and research in the state-of-the-art User Interaction Lab.
