Key facts

The Portuguese and Brazilian Studies MA from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with its unique focus on creative writing, social awareness, and visual cultures across diverse regions, trains students in the Portuguese language—both written and conversational—as well as broad cultural literacy in the histories and societies of Portuguese-speaking communities. The programme also offers opportunities for students to develop individual projects and take part in internships in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Brazilian Studies and the Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles.
We encourage combining Portuguese and Brazilian Studies with coursework in Spanish through Department-offered options like the Spanish and Portuguese Major and the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Minor. Accelerated Portuguese for Spanish speakers and upper-division courses taught in English are also available and offered regularly.

General requirements

In addition to the University's minimum requirements, all applicants are expected to submit a bachelor's degree in Portuguese a recognized university, a statement of purpose, and a writing sample. The writing sample may be in English or Portuguese. Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field other than Portuguese but who have substantial coursework and/or background in the field may also be considered for admission by the graduate affairs committee. If the committee deems that some area of the applicant's preparation in language or literature needs to be strengthened, it may require that one or more complementary courses be taken.
