Overview
The urban environments are being reshaped by breakthroughs in biotechnology, computational design, and the urgent challenges of climate change. The Bio-Integrated Design course from UCL responds to these shifts by forging innovative approaches to design —ones that are radical, refined, and critically engaged with the demands of our evolving society.
Nature is at the heart of the course—not just as inspiration, but as an active agent within the design process. Students explore solutions that integrate biological, material, and social systems to envision more resilient and responsive future cities.
Employability
The Bio-Integrated Design MSc equips students with a unique blend of scientific, computational, and design skills to create sustainable architectural solutions. Through interdisciplinary training in biotechnology, material science, and environmental simulation, students learn to work with living systems like algae and microbes, use digital tools for modelling and fabrication, and develop bio-receptive materials.
The course emphasises experimental design, collaboration across science and architecture, and strong research and communication abilities, preparing graduates for careers in academia, industry, or innovative architectural practice.
