Overview

Classes taught at The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program at Benedictine College are in a hybrid manner with a mix of synchronous coursework (not to exceed two Wednesday evenings per month via Zoom) and asynchronous work. Candidates will follow one of two tracks: Elementary or Secondary.

The elementary track leads to eligibility for a Kansas teaching license in grades PreK-6.
Secondary candidates with degrees in the following disciplines qualify for admission to the MAT.: Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Math, Music, Physics, P.E./Health, Social Science, and Spanish.

General requirements

MAT elementary program must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Verification of employment in an accredited school.
Agreement with a school-based mentor with at least 3+ years of teaching experience.
Ability to complete initial coursework prior to the first day of teaching.
Successful fingerprinting and background check to earn a L.E.A.P. license from KSDE (for candidates teaching in Kansas).

MAT secondary program must meet the following requirements:

Undergraduate degree or graduate degree in the content area for which the license is sought.
Passing score on the Praxis content test.
Verification of employment in an accredited school.
Agreement with a school-based mentor with at least 3+ years of teaching experience.
Ability to complete initial coursework prior to the first day of teaching.
Successful fingerprinting and background check to earn a Restricted license from KSDE (for candidates teaching in Kansas).
