Key Features
Students in the Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner Primary Care program delivered at New York University are encouraged to be active participants in classroom and clinical settings and to be involved in national NP organizations.
Students have opportunities to become engaged in scholarly activities and have presented their findings at national conferences. Students graduate with either an MS or DNP degree and are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) to become a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care (CPNP-PC).
NYU Meyers PNP graduates are employed throughout the United States and recognized as leaders in pediatric healthcare. PNPs are strong advocates for healthcare policies designed to improve the health and well-being of all pediatric/adolescent and young adults.
Practicum opportunities
- Clinical placements are arranged by faculty for each student to achieve their personal and professional practice goals.
- Students have placements in pediatric primary care clinical practices and in pediatric specialty practices, e.g., pediatric pulmonary, cardiovascular, oncology, endocrine, musculoskeletal settings.
- Students have one-to-one experiences in clinical settings with expert pediatric nurse practitioners who guide and evaluate student learning in conjunction with the Program Director to ensure individual student success in each clinical course and upon graduation.
- Preparation to successfully sit for the primary care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner national certification examination offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.
- Meet NYS and all state requirements for licensure as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
- Meet State and Federal requirements to obtain a DEA number upon graduation.
- Meet State requirements to obtain prescription privileges upon graduation.
- Prepared to practice as a PNP within the licensure authority of any individual state boards of nursing, evaluating patients, diagnosing, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests, initiating and managing treatment plans, including prescribing medications.

General requirements
- Prior to entering the specialty courses of the pediatrics track, at least one year of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse in pediatrics is required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required prior to entering the first clinical pediatric clinical course.
- A BS in nursing or BS/BA in a non-nursing field together with an associate's degree in nursing
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- NYS nursing license prior to beginning coursework
- Prior to entering the specialty courses of a respective nursing master's track, at least one year of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse is required.
- Must have taken a basic statistics course and a basic research course at the undergraduate level
