University of Montevallo program stresses close mentoring with department faculty, professional development, and curriculum tailored to individual student interests. The English M.A. culminates with our innovative thesis in which students produce publication-ready writing to help them achieve their long-term creative and professional goals.

In addition to meeting the University’s minimum standards for enrollment in the graduate program, the top applicants will hold a B.A. in English (or equivalent credit hours) and will submit two satisfactory letters of reference from current or past professors (or others familiar with the applicant’s scholarly potential).

If the student has a degree in a field other than English, he or she will be asked to enroll in a three-course sequence (12 credit hours) of the departmental survey of Literature in English before continuing on to the 30 hours of coursework required by the program.

Cover letter of one to two pages outlining the applicant’s reasons for pursuing the M.A. in English
Writing sample of 10-25 pages of the applicant’s best scholarly work*

*Students interested in creative writing may choose to submit an additional creative writing sample of no more than 15 pages with their application.
