Overview

Areas of active research within the Department of Physics at Indiana University Indianapolis include, biological physics, AMO physics, condensed matter physics, and physics education. Interdisciplinary research is common. Strong collaborations exist between our faculty and members of other departments of the School of Science, with the IU School of Medicine, with the School of Engineering and Technology and with the School of Informatics.

You’ll work closely during master of Physics with an advisor and an advisory committee consisting of your advisor and two other faculty members. You’ll work with the faculty to develop a plan of study, and the courses you take will reflect a coherent theme of interest.

Students have the option to complete a thesis. In the thesis option, you will complete a research project and write a formal thesis under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Non-thesis students complete a research project under the supervision of a faculty advisor and write a project report.

General requirements

Students who seek enrollment in the physics graduate program should have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and have a background in the usual undergraduate courses in physics, mathematics, and other sciences.
An average grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher in physics courses is expected.
Graduates from related fields of study in pure and applied science or engineering may be accepted on a probationary basis until they have completed any necessary undergraduate courses in physics.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is normally expected of all applicants. The GRE physics test is recommended, but not required.
