Overview

The Master of Microbiology and Immunology takes place at Indiana University Indianapolis. Current research activities include microbial pathogenesis and experimental therapeutics, with a focus on host-pathogen interactions in the extracellular niche, mechanisms of oncogenic pathogens, the role of the microbiome in human disease, and the molecular and cellular biology of obligate intracellular viral and bacterial pathogens. Investigators place a major emphasis on immunology, including studies of immune responsiveness, immune evasion by viruses and tumors, innate and adaptive immunity, antigen presentation, and B cell responses.

Faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology train PhD students in cutting-edge biomedical research; the department also offers a research-based MS degree designed to prepare students for advanced technical careers or to be competitive for subsequent PhD study.

Complete a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the United States by date of matriculation
Achieve a minimum undergraduate cumulative and science GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Complete all premedical science requirements, including:
- One year of general biology, general/inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physics with a minimum of two laboratory credit hours in each course
- One semester of biochemistry (not required but strongly recommended)
- One course in social science (i.e. Sociology)
- One course in behavioral science (i.e. Psychology)
