Overview

This practice specialty includes management of patients across the lifespan with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions. Building upon the existing skill set of the graduate-prepared registered nurse, the four-semester sequence provides family theory, health promotion, nurse practitioner role, and psychiatric-mental health assessment, pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic management skills. Successful completion of the program meets the national certification board eligibility requirements.

The online Advanced Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program from University of Nevada, Las Vegas uses a variety of teaching strategies designed to actively engage students. Two-day orientation sessions are held on campus before the beginning of each fall semester to enhance the connections among students and with the nursing faculty. This certificate has mandatory on-campus sessions throughout the program. Program start is contingent on class size.

Articulate the professional role, which includes the ethical code of conduct and scope of advanced practice of the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

Develop and monitor comprehensive, holistic plans of care that address the health promotion and disease prevention needs of diverse psychiatric mental health client populations.

Assess and monitor teaching/learning needs in a diverse psychiatric mental health client population.

Practice ethically in the conduct of research, management, and clinical professional practice.

Individuals who already have a graduate degree in nursing and meet the admission qualifications will be allowed to take courses as an advanced graduate certificate-seeking student.

A certificate will be awarded, documenting completion of the course work will be provided and transcripts showing completion of the courses will be available. Each individual applicant will be evaluated to determine the courses required in order to complete the specific certificate program.

Additional courses beyond the minimum courses needed for the certificate program may be required if the applicant's earned graduate degree in nursing lacks courses required by the UNLV School of Nursing.
