Overview
The Earth Sciences - Earth and Climate course at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam focuses on the Earth's surface processes and study climate records by applying field work with laboratory research to e.g.:
- understand and reconstruct land-surface processes, ocean and climate dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, (paleo-)ecology, and the role of humanity;
- assess the relationship between Earth’s spheres on timescales between tens and millions of years;
- quantify the magnitudes and rates of climate change;
- deal with environmental management and policy topics.

At the end of the programme, you will have acquired a sound knowledge of sustainability-related Earth Sciences knowledge, combined with the additional perspectives of economics and governance. This unique combination will enable you to pursue advanced careers in research, consultancy, international organisations and companies, and governments.

Your previous education needs to be deemed equivalent to at least a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree obtained at a research university (nominal duration 3 years). Programme specific requirements
Knowledge and understanding
- Bachelor’s level in Earth Sciences or a closely related programme is required;
- Common processes in Earth Sciences
- General academic skills: analytical and critical thinking, and scientific writing skills demonstrated for example by higher education BSc thesis or equivalent;
