The Quantitative and Systems Biology (QSB) Graduate Group at University of California, Merced offers cross-disciplinary doctoral and masters training to students from many fields in science and engineering, in diverse areas of biological research. 


With outstanding faculty across seven disciplines, Quantitative and Systems Biology offers unique cross-cutting opportunities to its diverse student body. Quantitative and Systems Biology students at University of California, Merced train to communicate across boundaries while mastering core disciplines and skills. 

Key Features 

  • QSB invites applications from all aspiring experimental, field and computational biologists who have basic training and experience in one or more core research skills such as laboratory work, fieldwork, mathematical modeling, statistics or computer programming. 
  • Students with diverse backgrounds, talents, and interests are encouraged to apply. A non-mandatory rotation track is available to first-year students.

General requirements

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution with a major appropriate to the proposed graduate program. This degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California.
  • Have a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) is required.
  • Provide TOEFL or IELTS test scores (international students only). All  graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English, must show evidence of having taken the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or TOEFL-Internet Based Test or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examination within the past two years.
