Overview
About the Program
We have a strong record in placing our Ph.D. students. The majority of students who have received Ph.D. degrees from the East Asian Languages and Literatures program of the University of Oregon have found tenure-track assistant professor positions at four-year U.S. colleges and universities. M.A.s have either gone on to study in doctoral programs or found a wide range of employment opportunities, including lecturer positions at the college level.
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies: The Chinese, Japanese, and Korean programs, which prepare students to work in a variety of professional and academic fields, provide intensive training in linguistic and textual analysis and an extensive exposure to literary theory and comparative and cultural studies. The department encourages students to develop their specialization in Asian literatures in broader, more comparative, and more interdisciplinary perspectives than has been the case in traditional programs. The faculty’s research and teaching interests cover the major fields, genres, and chronological divisions of Chinese and Japanese literature, film, and cultural studies, as well as modern Korean studies. They encourage creative connections and challenges to conventional disciplinary boundaries by exploring the relationships between literature and such areas as cinema, law, history, politics, religion, philosophy, sociology, theater and performing arts, and women’s and gender studies.
Comparative Literature: Several members of the department’s faculty participate in the University of Oregon’s Department of Comparative Literature. Many Comparative Literature courses can be used to fulfill East Asian Literatures and Languages program requirements.
Asian Studies: The department also has ties to the University of Oregon’s Asian Studies Program. Most Asian Studies courses can be used to fulfill East Asian Literatures and Languages program requirements.
