- Obtain an application form from the Institute of Latin American Studies and a brochure describing admissions policies and program information
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S.; or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution

- Take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) and have results sent to the Office of Admissions no later than December 1
