About

For more than 75 years, Tulane University Law's Master of Laws (LLM) program has offered students from across the globe a unique and valuable opportunity to pursue advanced legal education.

Overview

About this Degree

Candidates for the Master of Laws degree at Tulane University must complete 24 semester hours of coursework. Full-time students are expected to complete the LLM in two semesters (one academic year). LLM students must also write at least one paper in connection with a seminar in their field of interest or in connection with a directed research project.

LLM Students who received a JD or LLB (or equivalent) from a school located outside of the United States must enroll in a three-week summer orientation course, Introduction to US Law. International students must also complete and pass a legal research and writing course.

Programme Structure

  • The General LLM program allows students to design their own courses of study. General LLM students may enroll in virtually any course, with the general exception of clinical programs and Trial Advocacy. Some students pursue a broad range of courses, and others focus their choices more narrowly.

General requirements

  • The admission process at Tulane Law School depends on a full review of each application. For applicants to the JD program, this means that in addition to looking closely at the standard predictors of success in law school – the LSAT score and undergraduate academic record – Tulane gives significant weight to each candidate’s personal statement, letters of recommendation and previous accomplishments.
  • Similarly, for applicants to the LLM and SJD programs, this means that the law school record is very important, along with each applicant's personal statement and letters of recommendation written on the applicant's behalf and, for international candidates, evidence of facility with the English language.
