Overview
While preparing for certification, candidates for the program in Secondary Spanish Education at The City University of New York will learn to develop academically, linguistically and culturally enriching Spanish language education programs and to implement the necessary teaching practices related to these programs.
We offer five different graduate programs:
Spanish 7 - 12 for Spanish Majors (38 credits)
- Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Spanish comprised of a minimum of 30 upper-level credits in Spanish can apply for this program. It provides candidates who have a solid background in Spanish language, literature, and culture with the knowledge in education foundations and secondary Spanish education required for initial certification in Spanish.
- Candidates who already hold initial certification in an area other than Spanish and demonstrate proficiency in Spanish may apply for this program. (Students with initial certification in an area other than Spanish will end up with professional certification in that area and initial certification in Spanish.) The program provides candidates with more specific courses in secondary Spanish Education required for initial certification in Spanish.
- Candidates with an undergraduate degree in a field other than Spanish and with no education background may apply for this program after demonstrating proficiency in Spanish. It provides candidates with the educational experience and the content knowledge required for initial certification in Spanish.
- Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Secondary Spanish Education and who hold Initial Certification in Spanish for grades 7-12 may apply for this program. It provides candidates with more advanced education and Secondary Spanish Education courses resulting in professional certification in the field.
- Candidates with a Master’s degree in Spanish or a related area may apply for this program. It provides candidates with secondary Spanish education courses resulting in initial certification in the field. This program does not lead to a Master’s degree.

- Complete the Master's degree program with a GPA of 3.0 or better and apply for graduation.
- Successfully complete the student teaching semester (if applicable).
- Submit an application for certification to the City College Certification Officer.
