Overview

Begun as the Applied History Program in 1975, the Public History MA program offered at University of South Carolina is today one of the oldest and strongest in the country. Over five decades our program has produced nearly 300 graduates who have gone on to shape the field through professional careers in archives and libraries, museums, historic preservation agencies, historic sites, documentary editing projects, state and national parks, consulting firms, and colleges and universities. Not only does UofSC provide excellent training and real-world experience, it also provides full funding to most of our Master’s and PhD students.

Our graduate studies in Public History serves both those who come to UofSC for the M.A. in Public History as well as many Ph.D students who choose to have a field in Public History or earn the M.A. in Public History on their way to the doctorate.

Learning Outcomes

All students in the Public History program will demonstrate specific competencies required for professional practice in the public history field in which they are specializing, including competencies with information and communication technologies, knowledge of public law or professional best practices, and familiarity with the special problems of the particular cultural resources (documents, objects, buildings, sites) with which they will be working in their professional careers.
Students will gain practical experience in a non-classroom setting, performing work appropriate to their concentration and interests, mentored by a working public history professional through both internships and assistantships.
Students will produce a comprehensive portfolio of their work as a public history degree student, including a resume, short reflective essay, and public history projects.
