The Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology (SPA) at Western Illinois University is nationally accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). 


Possible Careers

Graduates will meet the academic requirements for certification as a speech-language pathologist by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).  Students wishing to work in Illinois public schools will also be provided with opportunities to meet requirements for licensure by the Illinois State Board of Education.  Graduates will be prepared to work as SLPs in all settings including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, and birth-to-three centers.

The graduate program in Speech Pathology at Western Illinois University is a close-knit community of students and faculty.  Class sizes are twenty or fewer which allows for lively group discussions and hands-on learning.  Students frequently meet with faculty one-on-one to discuss course material, clinic clients, or future career plans.  We are one of only a handful of graduate programs to offer a formal study abroad opportunity.  During the summer between the fist and second years, two to four students travel to Cardiff, Wales to complete clinical practica experiences through Cardiff Metropolitan University.

PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.

  • Applicants for admission to the School of Graduate Studies must hold a bachelor's degree from an institution that is accredited by the appropriate U.S. Department of Education regional institutional accrediting agency. 
  • Applicants usually apply for admission to a degree program simultaneously with admission to the School of Graduate Studies. 
  • If the applicant meets the minimum admission requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, a copy of the application materials is forwarded to the program of interest for consideration.
