Overview

History at Western Washington University offers students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of historical methods and to produce an original work of scholarship. In addition to seminar-style classes, graduate students work closely with faculty advisors to pursue a thesis topic of their choice. The MA thesis is filed with the library and in an online database available to researchers from around the world.

The program prepares students to:

Enter doctoral programs or pursue other advanced academic training in history

Teach at the secondary or community-college level

Assume positions as researchers, writers, teachers, and curators in a variety of public and private settings

General requirements

Admission to graduate status and to graduate courses requires completion of an undergraduate major in history or the permission of the department. Applicants must also complete the general section of the Graduate Record Examination prior to admission to the program.

All history applicants must submit a brief statement of purpose and goals, and a writing sample, such as a research paper or similar example of writing ability.
