The Biostatistics program of the University of Massachusetts Amherst prepares highly qualified individuals with advanced research skills to undertake public health research responsibilities.

Overview

The Biostatistics program of the University of Massachusetts Amherst provides a basic theoretical foundation for applied research in Public Health, and biostatistics research related to measuring and investigating contemporary biomedical and public health problems.

M.S. applicants are accepted with backgrounds in the quantitative sciences and from associated fields who have career interests in biostatistics and public health. The program provides a strong quantitative basis for understanding statistical methods, focusing on applications in epidemiology, biology, genomics, public health, and health sciences.

Degree Requirements

The degree program is generally completed in two to four semesters. A range between 30 and 45 credits is required, including either a 6-credit thesis or a qualifying exam.

General requirements

All applicants must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE); foreign applicants must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum TOEFL score is 600 or better for the paper-based exam or a score of 100 or better for the internet-based exam. 

Students should meet the following minimum criteria when applying for admission to the program:

  • Have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in the United States, or a foreign equivalent.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in their baccalaureate degree.
  • Have completed courses in linear algebra and multivariable calculus.
Admission is based on the applicant’s grades in undergraduate and graduate courses; test scores; two letters of recommendation; and the applicant’s personal statement.
