The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers advanced study and research opportunities leading to PhD, MS, and MENG degrees.

Key facts

Each student, in cooperation with his or her advisory committee, develops a plan of study including research and course selection appropriate to the student's individual interests and research needs. Courses of the Mechanical Engineering program of Virginia Tech include topics on: acoustics, active materials/smart structures, automatic controls, biomedical topics, combustion, finite elements in machine design, fluid dynamics, fuel cell systems, heat transfer, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering, propulsion, rotor dynamics, thermodynamics, turbomachinery and vibrations. Students often take courses from outside the department in mathematics, statistics, and many other disciplines.

The Mechanical Engineering Department also has international collaborations with the Technische Universität Darmstadt, as well as the 3+2 program with Shandong University in China. VT undergraduates with high GPAs can also apply for the Accelerated Undergraduate/Graduate degree program. A Nuclear Engineering Graduate Certificate is available for students to pursue, in conjunction with their graduate degree program.

General requirements

Generally, applicants must have a minimum target grade point average of 3.2 (4.0 scale) or better, for either the B.S. degree program, or the last 60 hours of course work

Research experience and the three letters of recommendation are a significant part of the evaluation of the application

Students will likely not be competitive with scores below a 150 on the verbal, a 155 on the quantitative, and 4.5 on the Analytical portions of the GRE.

Transcripts (A copy is acceptable to apply, but an official transcript will be needed with an accepted offer. Please check with the graduate school.)

Resume (One page is preferable. Do NOT upload copies of certificates; those should be listed on the resume)
