About the Program

The Petroleum Engineering program at University of Houston instills deep technical knowledge with an understanding of global perspectives on energy.

A Masters of Petroleum Engineering requires thirty (30) credit hours of approved courses for admitted students with B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. Admitted students with a different engineering undergraduate degree (chemical, civil, electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering) are also required to complete twelve (12) credits of leveling courses which prepare such students for success toward the Masters of Petroleum Engineering but are not credit toward the degree. These leveling courses do not replace an engineering B.S.

General requirements

GRE — An acceptable score within the Cullen College of Engineering standard on the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical portions of the Graduate Record Examination.
LETTERS — Three letters of recommendation from recognized professionals who can attest to the applicant’s capability for independent and creative thinking for the graduate level research in petroleum engineering.
STATEMENT — A written statement of the applicant’s professional goals.
APPROVAL — Approval by the Petroleum Engineering Graduate Committee.

In addition, students required to submit a valid TOEFL/IELTS score
Besides achieving an undergraduate degree in Petroleum Engineering, bachelor degree holders in other engineering disciplines such as chemical, mechanical, civil, industrial, electrical, etc. are recommended to apply.
