Graduates fill an important need in the community, serving in diverse positions in both public and private educational institutions. The degree fulfills requirements for the Texas Standard Principal Certificate. However, graduates also pursue positions across the educational community and in business settings.
Key Facts
The Administration and Supervision program of the University of Houston develops professional leadership, ethical, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. Through specialized coursework, preparing for the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Principal (268), and clinical –based internships, students will have the ability to:
- Work in complex, ambiguous, fast-paced, and often-uncertain contexts unique to schools
- Have a high commitment to the safety and dignity of students
- Maintain a strong work ethic and a desire “to get things done”
- Understand the professional knowledge base for school administration and use it to think reflectively, critically and creatively in dealing with problems and dilemmas
- Show confidence in self to (a) be an independent learner, (b) act on informed intuition, (c) know that seldom are there absolutely right answers to the endless situations encountered, and (d) be able to live with the consequences of independent actions
- Exhibit leadership with students, teachers, support staff, parents, and other community members to build and maintain a learning community within the school district and community
- Recognize the moral dimensions of schooling and maintain a high level of caring and ethics in motives, judgments, and interpersonal behavior

General requirements
- GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in upper division undergraduate coursework
- GRE scores: The GRE requirement may be waived for applicants to the program. The applicant must have at least one of the following from an institution accredited by one of the six regionally accrediting associations to qualify for a waiver: a) an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 or higher (on a 4-point scale) or b) a master’s degree.

- State of Texas Educator’s Certificate (for all candidates seeking principal certification): valid copy that clearly shows all borders and the state seal
- Teaching experience: two years at the time of acceptance or upon completion of the program of study; a service record from the employer can show this teaching experience
