The Master of Music in Music - String Pedagogy at Illinois State University trains students to become highly qualified and knowledgeable string teachers. Graduates will be ready to pursue a career in teaching strings in a variety of settings or to continue study at the doctoral level.

Overview

Music - String Pedagogy students at Illinois State University are expected to continue their development as musicians while increasing their knowledge of string pedagogy practices. 

The graduate curriculum for this sequence provides specialized study in string pedagogy (pedagogy and literature, professional practice, applied lessons on primary and secondary stringed instruments) alongside core music courses (music theory, history, and research methods). Chamber music and non-degree recitals are among the options for elective credit.

Learning outcomes

String Pedagogy students will gain critical professional practice experience working in the nationally-recognized ISU String Project (large group, small group, and private lessons) as well as through teaching the MusicScores! curriculum at local Head Start preschool sites.

Programme Structure

  • All master’s degree programs require a minimum of 50 percent of the non-thesis credit hours applied to the degree to be 400-level courses or above. 
  • This degree has a fully online plan of study available as well as a traditional fulltime on campus option. 
  • The ensemble requirement may be waived for online students with the approval of the advisor and the Music Graduate Coordinator.

  • The School of Music awards a limited number of Graduate Tuition Waivers on a competitive basis to incoming students who show promise for success and who have not received an assistantship or other awards funding tuition costs. 
  • The School of Music may also award Graduate Tuition Waivers to current students who show or continue to show growth and promise for success and have made positive contributions to the School. 
  • These tuition waivers are awarded upon recommendation of the faculty and approval by the Graduate Advisory Committee, and are contingent upon funding from the University.
