Public health works to protect the health of entire populations, ranging from local neighborhoods to entire countries and regions of the world. Public health professionals at Saint Ambrose University work in multidisciplinary teams to identify root causes of health problems and to develop solutions to improve access to health care and reduce inequities.

What will I learn?

At the Public health degree offered by Saint Ambrose University you will take courses covering the broad spectrum of public health which includes quantitative and qualitative research methodologies; quality, management, and outcomes in health systems; health policy, law, and ethics; and translational and community-engagement strategies.

Students will meet regularly with their advisor on a jointly agreed-to schedule. The full-time option will require students to take classes during the first 18 months – inclusive of approximately 200 hours of applied practice experience throughout the country – under the supervision of public health and other specialists in selected practice areas.

The curriculum will be comprised of asynchronous, online classes that cover subjects such as:

  • Behavioral/Social/Environmental Health
  • Ethics and Health Equity
  • Health Systems
  • Policy
  • Evidence-Based Practice/Application

In addition, students will complete elective courses, internships, and a capstone project.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission requirements

  • Official transcript showing completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. If you are currently enrolled as an undergraduate, provide a list of remaining courses and timeline for earning the undergraduate degree.
  • A statement addressing how your personal or academic background and experiences will bring a unique perspective to the program and contribute to a diverse and inclusive student community, no more than one page.
  • 3 letters of reference from either academic (i.e. a professor) or professional (i.e. a supervisor) sources.
